Oakham vs Isham Sunday XI - 3rd September 2006 Another proficient performance from Isham’s Sunday XI gave the team their 10th win of the season and allowed the team to finish the season on a high note. With the third spot still to be secured, Isham needed to win against a stubborn Oakham side. Stand in skipper Mark Bolar won the toss and decided to bat first on what appeared to be a superb batting track. And it did not disappoint as openers Will Chudley and Juan Harker set about destroying the Oakham bowling. Juan took a special liking to the surrounding roof tiles launching a huge six which landed on the pavilion roof, and then smashing an even bigger boundary straight over the head of the bowler and on to the tiles of nearby housing. Isham reached 100 within 14 overs for the loss of just one wicket - Will Chudley (29). But the solid start was almost undone as Ben Garlick fell an over later for just one, and soon after reaching his fifty, Juan was walking back to the pavilion. Steady resistance from Reynoldson, Lodder and Lambert helped the score past 200, but Isham were disappointed to not make a bigger score after causing carnage early on. Isham were bowled out in the 45th over for 216. Oakham set about the total slowly to begin with. Opening bowlers Jasmine Titmus and Nilesh Patel were keeping Oakham down to no more than 3 – 4 an over. But the first wicket was eluding Isham until Will Chudley came on who immediately made an impact taking a wicket in his 2nd over – Juan Harker taking a blinding catch at mid wicket. He did it again in the 3rd over, completely bamboozling Oakham’s third batsman who was comprehensively bowled. Isham’s tails were up but it all changed when 2 dropped catches, one from Nilesh at slip and another from Peter Short on the long on boundary (both off Will’s bowling), allowed Oakham’s batsmen back into the game. Soon Isham’s total was being eaten away as the home side were comfortably scoring 8 – 9 runs every over. Several more dropped catches and half chances were demoralising the team and Oakham looked sure winners. It took the skipper Mark Bolar to bring himself on and make the breakthrough and cause the “meltdown” of Oakham’s batting. A superb catch from Alex Brown on the long off boundary started the collapse and wickets started to tumble. Isham eventually running out the winners by 34 runs – Nilesh Patel picking up the final Rutland league wicket of the season.
