Isham Sunday XI vs Podington - 10th September 2006
Isham’s Sunday XI ran out comfortable winners at home to Podington, winning by 7 wickets. On a
superb wicket and lightening outfield, every Isham player contributed to the win, with several key
performances.
Batting first Podington started positively, posting 67 runs from their first 10 overs. It took a superb
delivery from Nilesh Patel to remove opener S. Rose and from then on, the Podington wickets began
to fall at regular intervals. Podington’s W. Baish struck some monstrous blows including two sixes
which helped continue Podington’s blistering run rate, but he was stopped in his tracks by Peter Short
who trapped him LBW. Shorty went on to take 2 more wickets leaving him with figures of 3 for 29
from his 7 overs.
But the moment of the game had to be Nilesh’s second wicket. Podington opener R. Stafford had
caused Isham problems for the entire innings with quick running and resilient batting. But a looping
leg break from Patel caught Stafford off guard and after a long wait, the umpire finally game him
LBW. After such a strong start, Podington would be disappointed to have only reached 175 for 7
from their 40 overs.
In reply Isham’s openers were contrasting in styles! The Boycott like defence of Dave Andrews left
Podington’s bowlers scratching their heads, whilst the explosive batting of former Podington boy Ben
Garlick left them ruing dropped catches. Ben reached his 50 in the 12th over, and finally fell to M.
Parsons for 60 – his innings included 13 fours!
As Ben Garlick left the field, skipper George Chudley was determined to carry on where Ben had left
off, and did just that, cracking a boundary after just facing 3 balls. George was finally bowled for 51,
several balls after reaching his half century with Isham just needing 5 runs for the win. Juan Harker
delivered them in his usual fashion, a hard hitting boundary to wrap up proceedings.
