Isham Sunday XI vs Oakham CC - 3rd June 2007

Whether it was Des’s “interesting” track, Shorty’s 3 dropped catches, or Danksy’s tea that was fit for a king, Isham were headed for defeat before the rain fell down. And even then Oakham were content on get soaked whilst the heavens opened. Oakham got the basics right and wanted it more, and it showed which team were the more serious in wanting to end the 2007 season as Division 4 champions.

Batting first Oakham started at a reasonable pace. Nilesh Patel was struggling to final the target in his first game back in 2007, whilst at the other end, Kalvin Lodder bowled a superb spell which removed opening D. Ramshaw for just 4. At 34 for 2 from 10 overs and having had two other chances to take wickets, Oakham appeared to be struggling, but skipper Mark Worthington had other ideas and uped the tempo along with J. Booth. Mark was dropped twice, once at slip on 34 and at deep square on 62, both times off the bowling of Peter Short which didn’t help his already woeful day.

Finally falling to Dave Barlow for 78, the Oakham captain had helped to put his team in a good position at 209 – 7 from their 45 overs.
With a challenging score to chase on a wicket that offered help to the bowlers, a light tea was required. Richard Danks didn’t quite read the script and produced a spread that filled you up just looking at it!

Needing 210 to win, George Chudley and Ben Garlick must have thought there were left overs from tea, being dismissed for 5 and 1 respectively. Chris Long and Kalvin Lodder put up some sturdy resistance and a run chase looked to be on. But Kalvin fell for 19 and with that the runs dried up. Three more wickets fell and with only Danks and Short left in the hutch, Oakham smelt victory when the weather hovered above Orlingbury Road. James Bilson and Dave Barlow resisted 10 minutes of Oakham bowling and pouring rain, and when play finally did end, everyone was left scratching their heads as to what the result was.

Confirmation of the result was swift as the league sec declared it an abandoned match. One team was obviously overjoyed with the end result, the other not so. It gives a little extra spice to the return match on the last day of the season, when surely both teams will still be challenging for if not the title, then the 2nd promotion place.
