Isham Sunday XI vs Orton Park - 20th April 2008
The Sunday XI picked up from where they left off last season, winning their opening game in the Rutland League against Orton Park. But Isham didn’t have it all their own way – a J. Clifton 5 wicket haul and contributions from M Kelly (21) and Clifton again (32) with the bat, meant the score line was a little tighter than Isham would have liked. On a murky and damp day, Isham had the pleasure of batting first. Ben Reid and Chris Long started well enough but Long eventually spooned the ball up to the waiting Orton fielder, to give Clifton his first wicket of 5. New recruit Chris Harrison then joined Reid and together they kept the score ticking over. Ben finally fell for 38, whilst Chris fell 9 short of his half century. From that point on the rest of the Isham batting failed dismally with the remaining 8 batsmen scoring on 49 runs.
Scoring only 158 from the overs, Isham were going to have to field well. Simon Court and Sunil Sukhdeo opening the bowling and kept Orton Park very quiet for the first 10 overs, only 24 runs being scored. Simon Court took the opening two wickets, A Fisher caught behind, and M Zubair caught at mid on by Richard Danks – in one of his more active moments in the field! Danks soon joined in on the act and ended with very tidy figures of 11 – 3 – 20 – 3. One of those wickets was mainly thanks to a marvellous catch at square leg by Alex Brown.
Orton steadied the ship with a 5th wicket partnership of 49 from J. Clifton and K. Ikhlaq, but both fell in quick succession and Isham neared the finish line. Chris Harrison, Alex Brown and Peter Short took a wicket a piece to help wrap up the result.
